Canal employee conduct rules and regulations established by the chief engineer (1845) prohibited the use of alcoholic beverages and threatened dismissal for those deemed guilty of even "a single case of intoxication; " required strict obedience to orders issued by superior officers and courteous treatment of all employees; prohibited the use of company "informers or spies," and advised employees to "abstain from political controvers[ies.]"
